Silverstream

Silverstream is on the Wairarapa and Hutt Valley Railway Lines, with half-hourly daytime electric services operated by Tranz Metro, which reach Lower Hutt in around 15 minutes and Wellington in around 35 minutes. Many commuters, however, still use their cars.

Silverstream is sited at the mouth of a small valley formed by the Wellington Region’s notable techonic activity. The Silver Stream Railway is a heritage railway operating a number of preserved locomotives that formerly worked on New Zealand’s national rail network. The railway periodically holds special themed days, such as a Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends Day and these are particularly popular with children. The line was part of the Wairarapa Line before a deviation was opened in 1954.
