Where weve come from
In 1994 the company bought and merged with Mark Real Estate to form Howard and Mark Real Estate, and was subsequently renamed Professionals, Gillies and Mark Real Estate three years later.
Today, Gillies and Mark Realty dominates Upper Hutt with a market share consistently in excess of 40%.
Recognition of Excellence
The company is no ordinary real estate agency. It is the only company to simultaneously achieve awards for top office and top company in the Professionals Group in New Zealand and it has done it twice. It was a finalist in the 2003 Wellington Business Awards for Professional Service Companies, and in the same year won awards for 'Office of the Year' and 'Residential Marketing-Branding' at the Real Estate Awards of Excellence.
Malcolm himself was a finalist in the Wellington Businessman of the Year awards in 2005.
Building on expertise
Over this period Malcolm created a company, Upper Hutt Developments, to create large scale residential subdivisions in Upper Hutt. This company has been responsible for bringing a number of high quality subdivisions to market including Waitoka Estate, Emerald Hill, Marua Palms, Riverstone Terraces and Mount Marua. The success of these developments and their associated marketing of Upper Hutt has been a major catalyst in the Citys economic prosperity in recent years.
The natural progression was to launch a construction company in 2005 to build homes on the sections developed by UHD. This company secured the Golden Homes franchise for the entire lower North Island. Golden Homes offers Kiwis an excellent value for money option for building a brand new home on a flat section.
Since its launch, the construction business has built over 500+ new homes (more than 100 homes in its first year of operation). Homes can be built on land sourced through the wider Group, or on land provided by the client.
Malcolm Gillies has always been intensely competitive. Its something that drove him to sporting success (representing Wellington at the under-19, Colts and Wellington B level, and Taranaki at NPC level), and its a quality that has now led to business success.
He has been involved in real estate since 1990. In that time hes taken an underperforming Upper Hutt real estate company and turned it into one of Wellingtons premier residential property businesses.
The company is the dominant player in Upper Hutt and Gillies Group Limited is now involved in real estate, construction and large scale property development. The company by-line 'all things property' perfectly sums up the business. As Malcolm says, 'we believe in leaving something on the table for the next person. If we offer value for money at every step in the process, and clip the ticket a little bit each time, we can create a genuine win:win for everyone.'
This philosophy has created a legion of followers who believe in Malcolm's ability to create wealth and value for everyone. As one property investment client says, 'its pretty simple really - I follow Malcolm wherever he goes because I know he'll leave something in it for me.'
Upper Hutt is Malcolms hometown. Outside rugby, school held very little interest so he left at 15 to take up a welding apprenticeship. After eight years he realized that being a welder wasnt going to allow him to fulfil his dreams, so he decided to change direction and sell insurance instead.
Three years later, he noticed a local real estate business for sale. Seeing it as an excellent source of leads for his insurance business, he walked in off the street and bought the business. It was a watershed moment although at the time it provided a lot of challenges. 'Id never sold a house in my life,' says Malcolm, 'I just bought it and started the next day. I had a rent roll with 200 properties to manage and one sales person.'
Malcolm employed his best friend also with no experience as the property manager and his wife as receptionist. They all started on the same day; a day he describes as 'horrendous'. Despite this, the insurance business was sold very quickly as it became apparent that it was 'getting in the way'.
This sums up Malcolms attitude to life in general and business in particular. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Malcolm works hard (and often creatively) to get the best result for everyone involved. Hes widely known as a deal maker and a visionary business person.
Malcolms strengths are having an eye for good opportunities, getting results, thinking outside the square, and solving problems. Underpinning this is his philosophy that there must be a win:win for every party to any deal.
